Melipona mondury produces a geopropolis with antioxidant, antibacterial and antiproliferative activities Anais da ABC (AABC)
SANTOS,TÁSSIA L.A. DOS; QUEIROZ,RAPHAEL F.; SAWAYA,ALEXANDRA C.H.F.; LOPEZ,BEGOÑA GIMENEZ-CASSINA; SOARES,MILENA B.P.; BEZERRA,DANIEL P.; RODRIGUES,ANA CAROLINA B.C.; PAULA,VANDERLÚCIA F. DE; WALDSCHMIDT,ANA MARIA.
ABSTRACT Geopropolis is a special type of propolis produced by stingless bees. Several pharmacological properties have been described for different types of geopropolis, but there have been no previous studies of the geopropolis from Melipona mondury. In this study, we investigated the antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiproliferative activities of M. mondury geopropolis, and determined its chemical profile. The antioxidant activity was determined using in vitro ABTS·+, ·DPPH, and β-carotene/linoleic acid co-oxidation methods. The antibacterial activity was determined using a microdilution method with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-resistant S. aureus. The antiproliferative effect was determined in tumor cell lines using the...

Picinin,Lidia Cristina Almeida; Toaldo,Isabela Maia; Hoff,Rodrigo Barcellos; Souza,Fernando Nogueira; Leite,Mônica Oliveira; Fonseca,Leorges Moraes; Diniz,Soraia Araújo; Silva,Marcos Xavier; Haddad,João Paulo Amaral; Cerqueira,Mônica Maria Oliveira Pinho; Bordignon-Luiz,Marilde Terezinha.
ABSTRACT Veterinary drug residues in bulk tank milk are important to all sectors of the dairy chain because they are one of the major factors which determine the safety of the final product. This study attempted to identify milk quality parameters that are associated with the occurrence of veterinary drug residues using multivariate principal component analysis (PCA). A total of 132 raw milk samples were collected from 45 dairy farms in the state of Minas Gerais - Brazil and analyzed for 42 analytes, including pyrethroids, macrocyclic lactones and antibacterials, using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry in tandem mode and gas chromatography with electron capture detection. Out of the 132 milk samples, 40 samples tested positive for at...

Modulation of drug resistance and biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the oral cavity of Tunisian children BJID
Zmantar,Tarek; Ben Slama,Rihab; Fdhila,Kais; Kouidhi,Bochra; Bakhrouf,Amina; Chaieb,Kamel.
Abstract Objectives: This study aims to investigate the antimicrobial and the anti-biofilm activities of Lactobacillus plantarum extract (LPE) against a panel of oral Staphylococcus aureus (n = 9) and S. aureus ATCC 25923. The in vitro ability of LPE to modulate bacterial resistance to tetracycline, benzalchonium chloride, and chlorhexidine were tested also. Methods: The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and the minimal bactericidal concentrations of Lactobacillus plantarum extract, tetracycline, benzalchonium chloride and clohrhexidine were determined in absence and in presence of a sub-MIC doses of LPE (1/2 MIC). In addition, the LPE potential to inhibit biofilm formation was assessed by microtiter plate and atomic force microscopy assays....

New Sulfur-Containing Polyarsenicals from the New Caledonian Sponge Echinochalina bargibanti ArchiMer

Arsenicin A (C3H6As4O3) was isolated from the New Caledonian poecilosclerid sponge Echinochalina bargibanti, and described as the first natural organic polyarsenic compound. Further bioguided fractionation of the extracts of this sponge led us to isolate the first sulfur-containing organic polyarsenicals ever found in Nature. These metabolites, called arsenicin B and arsenicin C, are built on a noradamantane-type framework that is characterized by an unusual As-As bonding. Extensive NMR measurements, in combination with mass spectra, enabled the assignment of the structure for arsenicin B (C3H6As4S2) as 2. The scarcity of arsenicin C and its intrinsic chemical instability only allowed the collection of partial spectral data, which prevented the full...

Removal and killing of multispecies endodontic biofilms by N-acetylcysteine BJM
Choi,Young-Suk; Kim,Cheul; Moon,Ji-Hoi; Lee,Jin-Yong.
ABSTRACT Removal of bacterial biofilm from the root canal system is essential for the management of endodontic disease. Here we evaluated the antibacterial effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a potent antioxidant and mucolytic agent, against mature multispecies endodontic biofilms consisting of Actinomyces naeslundii, Lactobacillus salivarius, Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis on sterile human dentin blocks. The biofilms were exposed to NAC (25, 50 and 100 mg/mL), saturated calcium hydroxide or 2% chlorhexidine solution for 7 days, then examined by scanning electron microscopy. The biofilm viability was measured by viable cell counts and ATP-bioluminescence assay. NAC showed greater efficacy in biofilm cell removal and killing than the other...

Volatile compounds of Lamiaceae exhibit a synergistic antibacterial activity with streptomycin BJM
Araújo,Sthéfane G.; Alves,Lucas F.; Pinto,Maria Eduarda A.; Oliveira,Graziela T.; Siqueira,Ezequias P.; Ribeiro,Rosy I. M. A.; Ferreira,Jaqueline M. S.; Lima,Luciana A. R. S..
Bacterial infections cause thousands of deaths in the world every year. In most cases, infections are more serious because the patient is already weakened, and often, the bacteria are already resistant to the antibiotics used. Counterparting this negative scenario, the interest in medicinal plants as an alternative to the synthetic antimicrobial drugs is blossoming worldwide. In the present work, we identified the volatile compounds of ethanol extracts of Melissa officinalis, Mentha sp., Ocimum basilicum, Plectranthus barbatus, and Rosmarinus officinalis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Also was evaluated antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts against 6 bacteria of clinical interest, and was tested the interaction of these extracts with...
